Advocacy Alert!
Governor Schwarzenegger has proposed drastic cuts to the California budget for 2008-2009. These cuts would affect all departments, including Education, Health and Public Health, and Social Services. Officials in the administration have also proposed lumping categorical programs into four grants, potentially hurting vital Cal-SAFE programs. ACT NOW to oppose these cuts. The Annual Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day and its corresponding Teen Pregnancy Prevention Month is fast approaching. The Day to Prevent Teen Pregnancy is Wednesday, May 7th. The National Campaign to Prevent Teen Pregnancy (www.teenpregnancy.org) will be conducting its Teen Quiz, and encourages programs all over the country to ask students to go online and take the quiz. In addition, CACSAP will be sending out a press release about the day, the quiz and teen pregnancy to local media outlets. We will also provide a link to the quiz here, on our web site and will be sending out materials related to National Teen Pregnancy Prevention Day over our e-mail list.
Most important, we will be highlighting regional CACSAP efforts to promote Teen Pregnancy Prevention month. In addition to sending regional information to the National Campaign, we will create pages here on our site that list activities that are happening around the state. If your region or agency is participating on any kind of event, please contact us at cacsap@cacsap.org to tell us about your event. The San Diego regional event is posted here now to serve as an example of what regions can do. Other possible events include encouraging students to take the quiz, putting up banners or information sheets in schools and community centers, and alerting the media to the issue of teen pregnancy in your community.
Especially now, with the budget crisis and pending cuts to our valuable programs, we need to make this issues surround teen pregnancy and parenting known. Use this opportunity to focus attention on the issue and on your programs. For information and tools for advocacy efforts, click here. Please take part in this National event and help us make sure our communities understand the need to support our efforts.

CACSAP is recommending that all Cal-SAFE programs continue to collect data using the GradStar program. Even though the state is no longer collecting this data, it's imperative that we continue to collect the data that shows our programs are effective! CACSAP is working on finding ways to evaluate Cal-SAFE data and appreciate the help of individual programs.
